New Books

Recently I ordered five new books from Amazon.com. Light in August, The Sound and the Fury and Utopia arrived this weekend. Anna Karenina and Les Miserables should be here soon. I am going to start reading Light in August today. Hopefully it will be able to get my mind off things for a while.

So I know I said I would start blogging some after finals, but my life has been super crazy since the minute I turned in my last final on Monday morning. The good news is: final grades have been posted and I somehow pulled a B in Spanish! More good news: I’m done with Spanish forever!

As soon as I got home from taking my last exam, I packed and left for Banner Elk, North Carolina with 36 of my closest friends. It was here that I experienced the single-most terrifying moment of my life. Because it rained the entire time we were there, we watched a lot of movies and did a lot of just hanging around the house. But one day, we ventured out despite the rain to do some hiking and exploring. Below is a picture of a bridge that Brooks led us to:

3268_1046876061260_1506420031_30099395_1787053_nAccording to Brooks, behind this door, people used to practice satanic rituals. He said there used to be pentagrams and such painted on the walls and the last time he was there, there were candles all along the floor…crazy! So it turns out that Brooks has never actually been in this room–only peeked his head up in it. He had no idea what he was missing. Several of the guys went up through this door, but Page and I were the only two girls brave (or maybe crazy) enough to follow.

4171_1086199791546_1122930004_30264119_4829579_nWhen we got into the room, we realized that it was much more than just a room with dirty drawings on the walls (and there was one very dirty picture on the wall right behind Ben in the picture above). It was at least three rooms deep with several smaller rooms off to the sides. The third room even had a small couch and paint supplies in it from when someone painted the walls yellow!

4171_1086200031552_1122930004_30264125_3843258_nSo I know this doesn’t sound too frightening at this point, but what you have to remember is the story about satanic rituals that we had been told and the fact that there was absolutely no light whatsoever in these rooms other than the headlamp that Ben had with him and the flash from the camera. As we were making our way out of the devil’s chamber, Tatum decided it would be funny to slam the heavy metal door shut and remove any of the small amount of light that had previously been coming through the open door. We were silent for a minute then every single one of us started screaming because somehow the headlamp turned off at the exact same moment, so we had no light whatsoever.

Scariest moment of my life. I felt like I was in one of those tv shows where crazy people are talking about when they saw ghosts and stuff.

The next scariest moment of my life came the next day, when we were climbing on rocks in a river in the rain. That story will come later.

Till then,

I am about to leave to see Last Year Portrait play in Athens, but I wanted to post this before I left, because everyone is moving in/out of my house right now, and all I can think about is sweet summer. I came across this poem by Emily Dickinson and thought it was beautiful.

122

A something in a summer’s Day
As slow her flambeaux burn away
Which solemnizes me.

A something in a summer’s noon —
A depth — an Azure — a perfume —
Transcending ecstasy.

And still within a summer’s night
A something so transporting bright
I clap my hands to see —

Then veil my too inspecting face
Lets such a subtle — shimmering grace
Flutter too far for me —

The wizard fingers never rest —
The purple brook within the breast
Still chafes it narrow bed —

Still rears the East her amber Flag —
Guides still the sun along the Crag
His Caravan of Red —

So looking on — the night — the morn
Conclude the wonder gay —
And I meet, coming thro’ the dews
Another summer’s Day!

Library

My roommate, Nicole and I have decided to start a library in our second room. We have been wanting to make some changes to that room for a while now, and we came upon the idea for a library while checking out a used bookstore in Little Five Points yesterday. I plan on buying and reading lots of poetry, literary classics, and hopefully some rare books.

Needless to say, if you have any used books that you don’t have any use for anymore, send them our way! Our library looks very sad right now because it is suffering form a severe lack of books.

Also, I have been thinking about blogging some of the more interesting poems and excerpts that I come across and some of my thoughts on them. But don’t expect anything till exams are over!
